No Storytime for Fall 2018

The Ballenger Teachers Center will not be hosting a Fall 2018 Storytime Series. Please stay tuned for updates about our Winter Storytime series.

If you are looking for things to do on Saturday mornings during Fall 2018, please consider the following suggestions:

  • The 18th Street Farmers Market is open every Saturday morning, 8am-12pm, through September 29.
  • Lincoln Log Cabin will be hosting a Saturday Story Series starting in October. View their full line-up on their Facebook page.
  • The Charleston Public Library hosts  to see a list of their excellent programming, including Saturday Make and Take events.

Have a great autumnal season!

Summer Stacks Shift

Although the BTC is usually much quieter in the summer, this May the BTC has been abuzz with activity.

My student workers have been busy re-organizing the BTC Stacks (a.k.a. Textbooks and Teaching Materials or Curriculum Collection) to be in call number order A-Z, left to right. We also had help from our fabulous circulation staff members to reorganize the Box Kits and Bag Kits in the same fashion. Previously, the stacks ran Z-A. For those of you who knew exactly where your favorite item was on the shelf, the new organization will take a little bit of time to get used to. For those of you to whom the BTC Stacks were a mystery, we hope this makes finding things a bit easier! Take a look at the pictures below to see the changes.

Find out more about what kinds of materials you can find in the BTC Stacks here: http://www.library.eiu.edu/btc/collections/curriculum.php

Shift in progress:

BTC: Practical Websites for Teachers

One of the most popular pages on our old website was the Practical Websites for Teachers page. These pages are retiring soon, but never fear! Mrs. McDaniel has been working to move the content to a new format. She has removed broken links and updated many sections with new content.

You can find the new BTC: Practical Websites for Teachers Gateway guide under the Research Guides tab on the new BTC Homepage. If you have any suggestions for sites geared toward educators to add to these lists, please send them to Mrs. McDaniel at mkmcdaniel@eiu.edu.

An Updated BTC: Websites for Kids

Preschool students visit the BTC

Today we had a very special group of visitors come to the BTC: Preschoolers from Immanuel Lutheran Early Childhood Center. The children came to EIU for a Kids and Science Day hosted by the biology department. After the students saw live snakes and other reptiles in the Biological Sciences building, they came for an interactive snake-themed story time from our Ballenger Teachers Center librarian, Michele McDaniel.

We read Can I Play Too by Mo Willems; In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming; From Head to Toe by Eric Carle; and Snakes by Nic Bishop.

If you are interested in bringing your preschool, daycare, or school group to Booth Library for a special story time event, please contact Michele McDaniel at mkmcdaniel@eiu.edu or call 217-581-6099.

Earth Day with S.E.A.

On Wednesday April 18, 2018 at 7pm, the Ballenger Teachers Center will host the Student Education Association RSO for an Earth Day themed presentation. Mrs. McDaniel will introduce students to Earth Day related resources for our pre-service teachers available at the BTC. Resources include a wide variety of kits, games, and science modules; resource books for environment related activities; and an assortment of children’s fiction and non-fiction books which can serve as the perfect springboard for a variety of activities. We hope to see many of our students for this fun-filled evening!

Illinois Young Readers’ Choice Awards

Each year, the Ballenger Teachers Center collects the nominees for the Illinois Young Readers’ Choice Awards.

Take a look at our Illinois Young Readers’ Choice Award Guide here to see the titles on the 2021 nominees lists.

The Rebecca Caudill Award is the flagship Illinois Young Readers’ Choice Award. It was first awarded in 1988. Twenty books representative of quality literature for children in grades 4 through 8 are chosen each year. Children have a year to read each book, and then vote for their favorite through their school or public library.

The Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) sponsors three additional awards:

  • Monarch Award (grades K-3) was first awarded in 2005
  • Bluestem Award (grades 3-5)  was first awarded in 2011
  • Lincoln Award (teens) was first awarded in 2014

Nominee lists are announced in March, and students vote in February and March of the following year.

2018 ALA Youth Media Awards

Every year, the American Library Association forms committees to select the best books of the year in a variety of categories. The selected titles represent examples of excellence in children’s and young adult literature and audio books. In addition to the gold medal award winners, each award will typically give honor awards to a few additional titles.

The 2018 Medal Winners and Honors are now on Display at the BTC. To learn more about these awards and to see a map of where they are located in the BTC, please visit the Awards Books collection page at the BTC Website: http://library.eiu.edu/btc/collections/awards.php

BTC Storytime

Our Spring 2018 Storytime series has finished. Please stay tuned for future storytime opportunities in Fall 2018.

Thank you to all the families who joined us for the program this academic year. Overall, we served 49 children in the 2017-2018 academic year.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the RSOs who volunteered their time and talents to the story time program this school year. We could not provide this valuable community outreach without your continued support.

If you would like to schedule your school, homeschool, or daycare group for a special storytime or thematic lesson, please contact Mrs. Michele McDaniel, Ballenger Teachers Center Coordinator to arrange a time to come visit the BTC with your group. I am happy to plan an engaging session tailored to the needs of your group.

BTC Basics

Whenever I lead a tour or class in the BTC, I always tell students that the key to navigating the BTC is “Location, location, location!”

Did you know that the BTC has over 13 different locations? Most often the locations separate out different types of materials such as textbooks and teaching materials, kits, juvenile books, and more. We also have a few temporary displays at any given time. It’s no wonder finding what you need can sometimes get a little overwhelming. I put together the following SWAY to help orient students, faculty, and visitors to finding items in the BTC. And as always, if you need help tracking things down, you can set up an appointment with me. Call the BTC at 217-581-8442 or send me an email at mkmcdaniel@eiu.edu. I hope you enjoy!
